What they forgot to tell you about university

Today I will reveal the greatest secret that THEY.. the big cheeses in this world forgot to tell you... Actually I won't but I liked sounded like a motivational speaker for a second there ;)

I just had a little revelation going between two lectures this morning that while it seems obvious, I think almost everybody misses it.

(Sorry for not posting this earlier).

I came to the realization that University isn't just another system for pushing people through. They do for a while, but after that you need to step out and above and beyond in order to come out on top.

Many of the people I see at school can't find jobs, and don't really seem to have what it takes to make it in the so called 'real world'. Simply because they just do what they have to do and learn just enough to get high marks in their courses. There is no love of the material or interest outside of what they learn in the class, do in the lab and regurgitate on the final.

Then there are another group of people, constantly applying what they learn, and looking to go above and beyond. You called them nerds/geeks in high school. But there is some good payoff's to the process. I think of the people involved in the extra curricular activities at my school. Activities in their field of study (not sports). They are actively applying their knowledge and gaining more experience. They are the ones that will be going somewhere as soon as they get done with school.

My Point? If your in a degree studying sciences, or anything other than the arts or the past. Take some initiative and get involved in activities that encompass your stream of learning. Join clubs, join the nerds who are looking to break the barriers of science. The ones that you see on discovery channel reports, and the ones that make a name for themselves while at school. These nerds aren't to be confused with the kids with the highest marks. Marks don't mean anything in this case. You may not do anything huge, but your going to have that edge of actual experience, and real world contacts that will make it or break it when you get out of school.

Not directly no. Just the above advice doesn't really apply so much, as most Arts degress are more lessons in how to learn. Not neccessarily job preparation courses. Ie. You might never have to use it again except for fun and acadamia. Science/Engg have to use stuff all the time.
